Indian Navy Gets 1st ‘Arnala’ Anti-Submarine Warfare Craft

On May 8, 2025, the Indian Navy received INS Arnala, the first of eight Anti-Submarine Warfare Shallow Water Crafts (ASW SWCs), marking a significant advancement in India’s maritime defense capabilities. This vessel was indigenously designed and built by Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers (GRSE) in collaboration with L&T Shipyard at Kattupalli, Tamil Nadu.

The commissioning of INS Arnala marks a significant stride in the Indian Navy’s ongoing efforts to modernize its fleet and bolster its anti-submarine warfare (ASW) capabilities Designed and built indigenously, INS Arnala underscores the success of India’s ‘Make in India’ initiative and the growing self-reliance within the domestic shipbuilding industry. Its advanced sonar systems, coupled with an array of weapons platforms, significantly enhance the Navy’s capacity to detect, track, and neutralize underwater threats lurking in littoral zones.

Furthermore, the integration of INS Arnala into the Indian Navy’s fleet strengthens its maritime domain awareness, enabling proactive measures to safeguard vital sea lanes and coastal infrastructure. This deployment contributes to the overall enhancement of national security and solidifies India’s position as a responsible and capable maritime power in the Indo-Pacific region. As further vessels of the ASW SWC class are commissioned, the Indian Navy will possess a formidable and adaptable force, ensuring the continued security and stability of India’s maritime interests.
